SHARPS MODEL 1863 CARTRIDGE CONVERSION CARBINE, .45-70

Description :

|
This is a Sharps Model 1863 or 1865 Carbine chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. It is a bit of a mystery. Although, in 1867, the U.S. Government decided to convert many of their percussion Sharps to fire metallic cartridges, they were chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. This conversion is in .45-70. The barrel is stamped "SHARPS 45-70 GOVt." and appears to be a factory barrel. Whether the conversion was done by Sharps or by a frontier gunsmith, I do not know. This carbine is in antique fair to good condition. Little to no original finish remains with the entire gun having a mottled steel and brown patina. There are a few small pits in some areas. The sliding lever lock on the trigger bar is missing. The sling bar was removed many years ago, possibly when it was converted. The mechanics appear to work properly. The bore is good. There is some pitting in places, but the rifling is strongly visible along the bore's length. The stock is in good condition with the usual small dings and scratches from use. It has an old, varnished finish. This is a well-used veteran of the Old West. Stock no. 31475
