This is a rare, Whitney-Burgess-Morse Lever Action Sporting Rifle chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. Billed as the "Burgess Repeating Rifle", this was Witney's first repeater, an attempt to compete with Winchester. It is a large frame rifle with an "S" shaped lever and a 28-inch, full octagon barrel. Only about 1500 of these sporting rifles were made between 1878 and 1882. Its .45-70 chambering also allowed it to compete with the single-shot Sharps Rifles of the period. This rifle is in good condition. It retains about 10% of its factory blued finish, mostly on protected areas of the barrel. The gun has a steel gray patina over most of its surface. There is some brown speckling and some scratches on the frame sides. There are also some small dings on the right side of the frame like it was tapped with a small ball peen hammer. The rifle works well mechanically. The bore is in good condition. The grooves are dark with some texture, but the lands are mostly shiny and strong. A good cleaning will help considerably. The stock is good with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are some cracks in the wrist and a small chip on each side where the tang meets the receiver. The stock has nice figure and that area of the wrist has some burl with the cracks following the grain. This is a rare lever action rifle of the Old West. Stock no. 31980
