Item No.: 10628 Price : $695.00
Item : EARLY 19TH CENTURY BRASS HILT OFFICER'S SWORD BY FREDERICK WIDMANN
Description :
This is an original brass hilt, eagle pommel Officer's Sword (known as hangers in this time period) manufactured by Frederick Widmann. Widmann came to the United States from Prussia and made swords from about 1816 to 1848. This sword is one of the earliest examples of his work that I have seen and could date to before 1820. It has an undecorated solid brass hilt ending in an undecorated eagle's head. The eagle holds the end of the guard in its beak. The 23" curved blade has a fuller extending about 2/3 of its length. There is simple line engraving on both sides of the blade. The engraving has a military motif with stands of arms and flags. The maker's mark of Widmann is stamped on the front of the guard. It is worn, but the name can be made out. There are also names stamped on both sides of the hilt with individual letter dies. The right side says, "Thomas Charles Pole" and the left side says "J.S. Deane". The brass has a nice dark bronze patina. The blade has some areas that appear to be blued. There is some rust spotting that has left a mottled steel gray and dark brown patina over most of the blade. There is no scabbard. If you are a fan of Widmann's work, this may be the earliest example you will ever find. Stock no. 31787
