Description :

|
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1899 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very fine condition with more than 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is light wear on the exposed edges. There is heavier finish wear on the magazine cover, butt plate, and trigger guard. The fire blue on the extractor has turned mostly gray. The bolt handle, originally bright, has a smooth brown patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is fine. There is a hairline crack running from the trigger guard back along the grain of the wood on the left side of the wrist. It is about 6" long. The wrist remains solid with no movement. There is a name and the number "6" stamped on the right side of the butt. There is no visible inspector's cartouche. Stock no. 31774
