Item :	HAND-BUILT WHITNEY-KENNEDY LEVER ACTION REPEATING RIFLE, .50 CALIBER

This is a hand-built, Whitney-Kennedy Lever Action Repeating Rifle chambered for a .50 caliber cartridge. Whitney produced about 15,000 of these from 1880 to 1886. This is a later gun with a full loop lever. This rifle is in very fine condition, but the interesting part is that this is not a real Whitney-Kennedy. It is a new rifle built by a master machinist as his own personal rifle. The gentleman is no longer with us, and I cannot say if the entire rifle is built by hand or if some of the parts are from an original. I suspect some parts are original, but I do know that he was quite capable of building every part by hand. Likewise, I know that the rifle is .50 caliber, but I don't know what the case looks like. A chamber casting will be necessary. There are absolutely no markings on this rifle. It is in very fine condition with more than 95% of its blued finish remaining. There is some very light rusting on the receiver, much like what you card off to leave the blue. There is some active surface rust on the lifter, which should come off easily. The blue on the receiver is thin looking. The barrel is a heavy tapered octagon, 28" long. There are a couple of small surface rust spots and specks. The bore is excellent. The gun appears to work very well mechanically. I don't know if the magazine tube is functional. There does not appear to be any spring in it. He may have used it as a single shot. The stock is in fine condition with just a few tiny dings from use. The gun is fitted with a tang sight, so the rear barrel sight is missing. The tang sight has no markings or gradations and appears to have been hand-crafted as well. This rifle is no ham-handed amateur job. It is beautifully made and hand fitted. Stock no. 31731
