|
This is an original, Russian Shashka Cossack Saber manufactured in 1945. The Shashka had its origins in the Caucasus in the 1600's. The earliest written use of the name Shashka dates to 1747. Russians encountered these sabers during their conquest of the Caucasus between 1817 and 1864. Russian troops preferred it to the issue sabers they had been using and started acquiring non-regulation examples for their own use. The first Russian government Shashta was made in 1834. They then invented a new design in 1838 for Cossacks. The final pattern was adopted in 1927 and was made until 1946. This is one of the final pattern sabers made in 1945. It is in very fine to excellent condition. The blade remains nearly 100% armory bright. The brass furniture has a great dark bronze patina. The wood grip scales are very fine to excellent. The scabbard is very fine as well with nearly all of the black finish remaining on the leather. This is an outstanding example of a Russian Shashka. Stock no. 31628
