Item No.: 10597 Price : $2,995.00
Item : BRITISH SHORT LAND PATTERN BROWN BESS MUSKET, .75 CALIBER, REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA
Description :
This is an original, British Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket. This is a second Model, a type adopted in 1768. This is one of the work horses of the American Revolution. Used extensively by the British, American forces were quick to place any captured on the battlefield into service. The number of these muskets in American hands rose dramatically after the defeat of Burgoyne and his 15,000 man army at Saratoga in 1777. Found in Virginia, this is a possible Committee of Safety musket, rebuilt by the Americans. The barrel has the acceptance markings of a King's musket, but the lock plate markings have been removed. The musket does not have the Pratt improvement on the ramrod pipe and the lock a has single screw behind the hammer. This dates it prior to 1777. The musket is in very good condition. The metal has a heavily speckled steel gray patina. There is some light pitting in places. The brass furniture has a nice golden brass patina. The lock will hold at full cock but will drop if you push on it lightly. The frizzen works correctly. The bore is fair with some pitting. The touch hole appears to have been lined. The stock is in good condition with a scattering of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. The front sling swivel is missing. There are some small chips along the barrel channel. There is a big chip on the left side along the barrel channel. There are a few small powder post beetle holes in the wood. The rear barrel pin above the back of the ramrod entry thimble has been replaced with an old forged nail. This is an interesting musket that may have seen use by the Americans. All conjecture, mind you, but something to think about! Stock no. 31638
