Here is an original, Winchester Model 1897 Riot Shotgun with a 20-inch barrel and cylinder bore. It is in the correct "E" prefix serial number range. My book of Winchester serial numbers dates this gun to 1946, but Bruce Canfield disputes this in his book "Combat Shotguns". He dates it to around 1942, which makes more sense. The gun has a Flaming Ordnance Bomb stamped on the barrel and "U.S." stamped on the left side of the receiver. The gun is in fine condition. The receiver retains more than 90% of its factory blued finish with some light wear on the exposed edges and a few small scratches in the finish. The barrel and magazine tube have been professionally refinished and retain nearly all of their blue with some friction rubbing on the magazine tube from the slide. Both military markings are bright, stamped after finishing. This might indicate that the military refinished the barrel and stamped it. Or it may not! The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock and forearm are excellent, as well. There are no markings or cartouches on the wood. Included is a beautiful, WWI Model 1907 leather sling in very fine condition. It is marked "WESTERN MFG. CO." and dated "1917.". It also has "R.W.C." inspector's initials. This is a great-looking '97 Riot Gun. Stock no. 31626
