Description :
|
This is an original, Winchester Model 1873 Rifle manufactured in 1879 and chambered for the .44-40 (.44 WCF) cartridge. This is a late First Model 1873 with grooves mortised into the frame for the dust cover. It has a 24" full octagon barrel. The transition between First and Second Models took place in 1879. This rifle is in fair to good condition. It has been reblued some time ago. It retains 90% of this finish with some mottling on the frame. There is also some fine pitting on the frame, which has been blued over. The thumb oval on the sliding dust cover has been heavily reworked and stippled. The action appears to work correctly. The bore is poor to fair with some moderate pitting. It has been cleaned and polished. The rifling is visible along the bore's length. The stock is good with a scattering of small dings and gouges from use. There are some hairline check cracks along the grain on the left side of the butt. This is a real Old West Winchester '73, the Gun That Won the West. Stock no. 31561
