Description :

|
This is an original, Civil War Cartridge Box made by L.S. Baker of New York. This is an early to mid-war box made for the .58 caliber rifle musket. It is complete with both of the cartridge tins. This box would have held 40 paper cartridges. The box also has its original lead filled cartridge box plate on the flap. This was used to hold the flap down when the closure strap was unfastened during combat. This box is set up to be worn on the waist belt instead of with the shoulder strap. An original waist belt is included with its original lead filled "US" belt plate. There is also an original cap pouch made in Philadelphia, Pa. This set is in very good condition. The cartridge box is complete with tight stitching. The fastening strap on the flap has a tear on one side. The leather remains supple with some crazing and cracking of the black surface. There is a very small amount of flaking. The strap buckles retain about 50% of their black japanned finish. The belt remains flexible with some surface flaking but may not be a military belt. The cap pouch is in fine condition with tight stitching and flexible leather. The sheep's wool used to keep the caps from falling out of the pouch has long since disappeared. There is a maker's mark on the inner flap that I can't quite make out. Both plates are very fine with nice smooth bronze patina. There is some scratched doodling on the back of the belt plate. This is a good-looking set of Union accoutrements. Stock no. 31528
