RARE, SCOTTISH, FRASER SIDE LEVER FALLING BLOCK RIFLE, .450-2 1/2" CARTRIDGE

Description :
|
This is an original, Side Lever Falling Block Rifle made by Daniel Fraser of Edinburgh, Scotland. Fraser was a preeminent maker of firearms, building what some consider to be some of the finest rifles ever made. He was also a shooter and marksman and most of his early guns were made for target shooting. Every single part of his rifles was built in-house. He built over 4,000 firearms during his career, but only about 400 were falling blocks. This rifle is a military style rifle, possibly built for long range target competition with the Scottish rifle Team. It has a 34" heavy round barrel with military type sights. It has a full-length forearm with a horn tip, secured by one barrel band. It is .450 caliber using a 2 1/2" cartridge case. This is an early rifle built prior to 1889. This rifle is in fine to very fine condition. It retains 80-90% of its factory blued finish with some small nicks and tiny scratches on the barrel. There is some finish wear at the muzzle from something being affixed, but I can't imagine it being a bayonet. The frame retains nearly all of its bone case color. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very fine with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. The hard rubber butt plate has a couple of small dings. While plainer than many of his later hunting rifles, this is still a beautiful example of Fraser's work. Stock no. 31484
