Item :	RARE SHARPS-BORCHARDT MODEL 1878 MILITARY RIFLE, .45-70 CALIBER

Here is an original, Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 Military Rifle chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Sharps-Borchardt had a hammerless falling block action with a flat sided receiver. The military rifle has a 32 1/8" round barrel with a full-length stock held by two barrel bands. It has military sights and a cleaning rod. Sharps produced about 6,900 of these between 1878 and 1881. This rifle is in very good condition with about 40% of its blued finish remaining. Most of the blue has turned a smooth brown. There are a few rust speckles in places. The rust is a bit heavier on the checkered steel butt plate, which has a dark brown patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. There are some small spots just above the throat, but the bore is mostly bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. The wood looks a little dry and could probably use some oil. Unfortunately, the cleaning rod is missing. This rifle should clean up beautifully. It would be perfect for a black powder cartridge shooter. Stock no. 31457
