This is an original, WWII V-44 Survival Knife manufactured by Kinfolks. Originally made by Collins & Company as their No.18 Machete, the knife was adopted in 1934 as a survival knife for Air Force pilots in tropical areas. During the war, they were also made by Case, Kinfolks, and Western Cutlery. Serving primarily with pilots in the Pacific Theater, a small number were issued to the U.S. Marine Corps. They were used by the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion (Carlson's Raiders). The knife was replaced (in pilot's jungle bail out kits) in October of 1942 by a round tipped, folding machete. This knife is in very good condition. It is 14-3/16 inches overall with a 9-3/16-inch blade. The blade has a steel patina with a heavy sprinkling of dark brown spotting. The blade exhibits fine pitting over much of its surface. The brass guard has a nice dark bronze patina. The black Bakelite handle is very fine with a few small dings from use. The left side of the blade is marked with the Kinfolks logo. The leather scabbard is very good to fine with some darkening near the tip. One of the rivets attaching the belt loop has pulled out of the scabbard body and there are some small scuffs and scratches on the leather. The Kinfolks V-44 is the second rarest variation of this WWII knife. Stock no. 30505
