TYPE II REMINGTON SPLIT BREECH CARBINE, .50 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original Remington Type II "Split Breech" Breech Loading Carbine chambered for the .50 rimfire cartridge. The "Split Breech" Remington was the predecessor of the later "Rolling Block" rifles. It was the first Remington arm chambered for a metallic cartridge, and the last type arm supplied on contract to the Union Army before the war ended. Production of the carbine was sub-contracted to the Savage Revolving Arms Co. of Middletown, Ct. The Union contracted for a production of 15,000 carbines, but the first 1,000 were not delivered until September of 1865, well after the cessation of hostilities. The final shipments were not delivered until May of 1866. Nearly all of these were sold to France in 1870 for use in the Franco-Prussian war. Existing examples of the type II are quite scarce. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. The barrel retains about 50% of its blued finish with a mottled smooth brown/blue patina. There is some light pitting in a small area near the muzzle. There is no finish remaining on the receiver, trigger guard, or butt plate. They have a silvery steel patina with a few speckles of brown. The carbine has excellent mechanics and a fine bore. There are a few specks in the bore, but it is mostly bright with strong rifling. The walnut stock and forearm are in fine condition. They appear to have been lightly sanded sometime in the distant past. This is a nice example of a scarce carbine, Remington's first cartridge longarm. Stock no. 31156
