Item :	ENGLISH FLINTLOCK COACH BLUNDERBUSS BY HENRY NOCK, BRASS BARREL, CA. 1790-1804

Here is an original, English Flintlock Coach Blunderbuss manufactured by Henry Nock. Nock was a premier English maker, producing some of the finest arms of the Napoleonic era. In 1789 Nock was appointed gunmaker-in-ordinary to King George III, and in 1802 became Master of the Gunmakers Company. One of the guns he was known for was the Coach Blunderbuss. It was a short barreled arm with a belled muzzle used for close defensive work, like defending a coach from Highwaymen or boarding an opposing vessel. Because of its short range, smaller charges of powder were used. This allowed the barrel to be made of brass. This gun is in fine condition. It has been lightly cleaned leaving the lock and other iron parts bright. The brass barrel and furniture have developed a light golden yellow patina. The mechanics are excellent. The smooth bore is excellent as well. It is of uniform diameter until it hits the bell about three inches from the muzzle. I have nothing to measure it, but it appears to be about .70 caliber. The barrel is 16-inches long. The stock was lightly sanded in the past. It is redeveloping some patina and has a few small dings and scratches from use. The bottom of the butt is stamped "W. PIKE NO.17". This is probably a rack number. There was an HMS Pike, a schooner of four 12-pound carronades. She was commissioned in 1804. Nothing explains the "W", and I have no idea if the stamping refers to a ship. The ramrod appears to be original with a brass tip. This is a nice example of a Nock Blunderbuss in good working condition. Stock no. 31160
