|
This is an original, late Civil War Gallager Carbine made by Richardson & Overman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally a percussion arm, the last 5,000 produced were cartridge firing, chambered for the 56-52 Spencer cartridge. They were delivered in May of 1865. In 1870 about 2,500 were sold to France and served in the Franco-Prussian War. These cartridge Gallagers often have blued frames and that is the case here. The frame appears to have been reblued. I do not know if this was done for the French sale, or not. This carbine is in fine condition with about 95% of its blued finish remaining. The barrel is just turning a plum color. The lock works very well. I don't know about the firing pin assembly. The bore is excellent. The walnut stock is very fine with just a tiny ding or two from use. A cartridge Gallager is a scarce carbine. Stock no. 31154
