Item No.: 10543 Price : $1,650.00
Item : ANTIQUE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE, .50-70 CAL.
Description :
This is an original, antique, Springfield Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle manufactured in 1872 and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. Springfield Armory produced 10,001 of these rifles under a royalty agreement with the Remington Arms Company in 1871 and 1872. A reluctance to pay royalties to Remington led to the adoption of the M1873 Trapdoor Rifle. A safety feature on these rifles was the "locking action" which caused the hammer to return to the half-cock position when the breech was opened. This rifle is in fine condition. The barrel and stock furniture were finished armory bright and remain mostly bright with some fine brown speckling. The trigger guard is mostly a smooth brown. The butt has a heavier speckling of brown. The receiver was color case hardened and about 30% of the color remains visible, mostly on the sides. The top of the receiver is mostly brown. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is in fine condition. There is some light erosion near the throat, but the rifling is strong, and I believe that this rifle will shoot well. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dents and scratches from use. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The number "81" is stamped into the right side of the butt. If you have thought about shooting black powder cartridges, this is a great rifle to start with. Stock no. 31235
