Here is a rifle with a long and storied service history. This is an original, Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant Rifle manufactured in 1915 by New England Westinghouse Company under a Russian contract. As Russia ramped up for WWI, it quickly became apparent that their manufacturing capability was not up to the task of providing the huge numbers of arms needed. Russia placed contracts with Remington and Westinghouse to produce M-1891 Rifles to try to fill the demand. American production peaked just before the Czar abdicated in March of 1917. Shipments continued to the Provisional government of Russia until the Bolshevik Revolution in October of 1917. The communists renounced Russia's debts and the rifles that were sitting in Russia awaiting payment were seized. Now to this rifle! It was built in America in 1915 and then made the long trip to Russia, to serve in WWI. It continued in service with the Bolsheviks and was eventually captured by the Finnish Army in the 1939 Winter War. Reworked by the Finns, it saw service against the very Russians who had contracted for the rifles in 1915. Eventually it was sold as surplus, returning to the United States, where it was built 110 years ago. This rifle is in very good condition with matching numbers. It exhibits a few of the features of a Finnish rebuilt M-1891. The receiver is marked with the "SA in a box" marking signifying Finnish Army ownership. The Russian sight gradations have been replaced with Finnish meter gradations on the right, but the Russian markings remain on the left side. The stock, though, was not replaced. It appears to be original. The rifle retains about 70% of its original blued finish. There is some light finish wear on the exposed edges and barrel bands. The matching bolt is bright. The bolt handle is beginning to turn brown. The mechanics are excellent, and the bore is in very fine condition. The stock is very good with a few small dings, scratches, and scuffs from use. At one point there was a stock disc, but it is now missing. The included sling appears to be original to the Rifle's Finnish usage, but I am not sure. There are tiny importer marks on the barrel. Overall, this is a nice example of a Westinghouse Mosin-Nagant. Stock no. 31148
