Item :	U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1795 FLINTLOCK MUSKET, TYPE II TRANSITIONAL

Here is an original, Type II Transitional, U.S. Model 1795 Flintlock musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1808. When adopted in 1795, these muskets were referred to in correspondence as the "Charleville Pattern". They were a close copy of the French Model 1763 Charleville that was widely used by America during the Revolution. This was the first official, standardized musket made for the U.S. Government, the first arm to be produced by the new U.S. Armories, and the very first model of firearm produced at Springfield Armory. The Type I was the first example of these muskets to have markings and was made from 1799-1802. They are .69 caliber with a barrel length of about 44 1/2". The Type II was made from 1806 to 1809 with some overlap with the Type III. This musket has the rounded, detachable iron flash pan on the lock and has sling swivels without screws, both features of the Type II. The trigger guard, however, has rounded front and rear finials, a feature more commonly associated with the Type III. I believe it represents a transitional piece, made as the newer parts became available. The musket is in very good condition with a steel gray patina, heavily mottled with dark brown. There is significant pitting on the lock and barrel in the area around the flash pan. The lock works well. The bore is dark with significant pitting. The stock is in antique good condition. There is a large chip missing above the rear top of the lock mortise. It has been smoothed at some time in the past. There is a crack running from the side plate forward about 4 inches to the barrel channel. There is a two-inch chip missing at the end of the crack right at the barrel channel. It has been worn smooth from handling. The initials “W X P” are carved on the rights side of the butt. The Model 1795 is scarce, but no collection of American military arms is complete without the very first type made! Stock no. 25222
