FRENCH GRAS MODEL 1874/80 RIFLE, 11X54MMR

Description :
Here is a French Gras Model 1874 Rifle manufactured at St. Etienne in 1876 and chambered for the 11x59mm Rimmed cartridge. It has been fitted with the modifications of 1880. This was the addition of a groove in the receiver to direct gases away from the shooter if the cartridge case ruptured. The Gras replaced the needle fire Chassepot rifle and was the first purpose built metallic cartridge firing rifle in French Service. This rifle is in very good condition with mismatched parts. The barrel has a smooth, dark brown patina. The receiver and trigger guard are a lighter brown. The butt plate is dark brown. The barrel bands have a steel/brown patina. The rifle works well mechanically. The bore is good, a little frosty, but with strong rifling along its length. The stock has a heavy scattering of dents, scratches, and gouges from use. There is a large number "3" stamped on the right side of the butt. Stock no. 30902
