Here is an original, Colt Model 1849 Percussion Pocket Revolver manufactured in 1854. This is a .31 caliber, 5-shot revolver with a 4" barrel. Produced continuously from 1850-1873, the M1849 Pocket was tremendously popular, and over 350,000 were made. Approximately 280,000 had been produced by the Civil War's end in 1865. The M1849 went west on the Oregon Trail and traveled to the California Gold Fields. Thousands were privately purchased and carried by soldiers of both sides during the Civil War. After the war, thousands more were again carried into the great American West. It is an iconic American firearm. This revolver is in very good condition with all matching numbers. There is little finish remaining on the iron parts of the gun. It has a mostly dark brown patina with some steel gray peeking through in areas. It has a strong cylinder scene. The trigger guard and back strap retain about 60% of their original silver plating. The mechanics work very well. The bore and chambers have a light brown patina that is mostly smooth. The rifling is sharp along the bore's length. The varnished wood grips are very good to fine with a few small dings from use. Interestingly, this revolver has a family crest engraved on the top of the backstrap behind the hammer. It is a Demi-Lion Rampant holding an Anchor. I know that the Peck and Shields families used this as a family crest. It was also used by families with a sea-faring heritage. It definitely warrants more research. This is a nice example of the '49 Pocket. Stock no. 30784
