VERY RARE, WHITNEY IRON FRAME, TWO TRIGGER POCKET REVOLVER, .32 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Whitney Two Trigger Pocket Revolver. Whitney made these between 1852 and 1854. It is a 5-shot, single action, percussion revolver of .32 caliber with a 4" barrel. The revolver has a second trigger in front of the trigger guard. This trigger releases the cylinder and allows the user to manually rotate the cylinder to the next chamber. Release that trigger when the next chamber is in position, the cylinder locks in place, and the gun can be cocked and fired using the hammer and the second trigger. This is a clumsy mechanism, but Whitney wanted to avoid any patent infringement with Colt that might bring a lawsuit. Whitney only made about 650 of these revolvers, most of which had brass frames. A very few were made with iron frames, like this example here. Only about 50 were made with iron frames making this an extraordinarily rare American arm. This revolver has serial number "15". It is in very good to fine condition. Only traces of the original blued finish remain in protected areas. About 10% of the silver plating remains on the brass trigger guard. The majority of the gun has a mottled steel gray and smooth brown patina. The mechanics work very well, exactly as designed. The bore is fair to good with some light pitting but visible rifling along the bore's length. There is some rusting in the chambers. The grips are in fine condition with just a tiny ding or two and some light wear on the edges of the butt. The revolver has well executed engraving on the frame. There appears to be an old repair to the hammer. This is a very unusual and very rare revolver. Stock no. 27185
