Item No.: 10472 Price : $1,250.00
Item : LEMAN PERCUSSION CONVERSION OF HARPERS FERRY MODEL 1816 MUSKET, .69 CAL.
Description :
This is a U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry Armory in 1816. Harpers Ferry made more than 350,000 of these from 1816 to 1844. Many were converted to the percussion system for service in the Civil War. This rifle has been converted to percussion. The work was done by Henry Leman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This is a bolster conversion, where the breech of the percussion barrel is removed and replaced with a percussion bolster breech. It was the strongest method of conversion. This rifle is in very good condition. The barrel has a steel patina with a heavy sprinkling of brown specks overall. The barrel bands and trigger guard have a mottled brown and steel patina. The butt plate is mostly dark brown. The lock plate and hammer are a smooth dark brown. The lock works very well. The bore is dark, rusty, and heavily pitted. The stock is in good condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. Most have been worn smooth over the years. There are remnants of a cartouche on the left flat of the stock. The ramrod has a forging flaw about halfway along its length. As late as Gettysburg in 1863, 60% of the long arms on the field were smoothbore .69 caliber muskets. Stock no. 30026
