U.S. CONTRACT MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK MUSKET BY N. STARR, .69 CALIBER

Description :
|
Here is a U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket manufactured by N. Starr of Middletown, Connecticut in 1831. It is a single shot, muzzleloading arm of .69 caliber with a 42" round barrel. This is an early Type III musket, originally finished Armory Bright. Starr produced 15,530 of these from 1829 to 1840. Many of these were converted to the percussion system of ignition for service in the Civil War. That is the case here. This musket has been re-converted back to the flintlock configuration using original parts. It is in very good condition. The metal has a dark brown and gray mottled patina. There is pitting around the breech. The barrel bands have been cleaned to bright. The lock plate, hammer, and butt plate are dark brown. There is a yellowish film on the bright metal that looks like old cigarette smoke that was deposited over the years, but it doesn't smell like cigarettes. I suspect it can be cleaned off with a mild solvent. The lock works well with a heavy main spring. The bore is dark and heavily pitted. The stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There is the dim outline of a cartouche on the left flat of the stock, but it cannot be made out. The ramrod is missing. The Type III Model 1816 was the type most converted to percussion, making original flintlock examples quite scarce and expensive today. A good re-conversion is much easier on the pocketbook. Stock no. 30029
