Description :
|
This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1903 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in fine condition with about 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. Most of the finish wear is on the butt plate. The oil quenched frame has a mottled black and dark gray finish. There is some rust speckling on the side plates. Some of the fire blued finish remains on the extractor. The body of the bolt has a bright finish. The bolt handle has a smooth darkening patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and a fine bore. The bore is dark but smooth with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a clear inspector's cartouche on the left wrist dated 1903. This is a great Krag in nice condition from the last year of production. Stock no. 30359
