REMINGTON NEW YORK STATE CONTRACT ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE, .50-70 GOVT.
Description :
This is a Remington Rolling Block Rifle made under contract for the State of New York's National Guard units. These were made about 1872 and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. The New York Rolling Blocks had several distinguishing features. They have a long, curved hammer spur and the thumb lever protrudes out to the left rather than upward. They also incorporate a special safety feature that automatically returns the hammer to half-cock when the breech is closed. About 15,000 were made. This rifle is in very good condition. There is little to no original finish remaining. The entire rifle has a bright steel patina. There are some brown speckles overall. The mechanics are excellent with tight lockup. The bore is in very fine condition. There are a couple of small pits but for the most part it is bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very good with a scattering of small dings, dents, and scratches from use. There are three strong inspector's cartouches on the butt. There are a couple of sub-inspector's initials on the metal parts. Included is a good replica leather sling in excellent condition. I have always felt that the New York contract guns were the best of the military Rolling Block rifles. This one should be a great shooter. Stock no. 30588
