Item No.: 10441 Price : $1,195.00
Item : FINE, CIVIL WAR MODEL 1851 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER'S SWORD & SCABBARD
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Model 1851 Staff & Field Officer's Sword & Scabbard made by Shuyler, Hartley, and Graham. This was the sword carried by Infantry Officers in the field. Officers had to purchase their own swords. A well-to-do officer would purchase a sword from Tiffany's, Horstmann, or Shuyler, Hartley, and Graham. These were better quality swords with more decoration gilding. This sword has a white shark or ray skin covered grip with wire wrap. The guard and pommel are gold washed. The blade has extensive acid etching decoration with a pair of flags with the words "STAND BY THE UNION", eagles with ribbons declaring "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the Liberty Cap. The name "SHUYLER / HARTLEY / GRAHAM / NEW YORK" is etched on the left ricasso. The scabbard has gold washed hangers and tip with a nickel- or silver-plated body. The sword is in fine condition. This was a sword that was worn in the field and not just hung on a wall. A good portion of the drag at the tip of the scabbard has worn away. On a shorter officer, the sword would have dragged the ground as he walked. The grip is in very fine condition with light wear but no damage to the ray skin. The wire wrap is in great condition. About 60% of the gold wash remains. The guard has just a little movement in it. The etched areas of the blade have a light gray patina with the tip of the blade remaining bright. The scabbard furniture remains a bright brass color with some speckles of corrosion. The scabbard has a liberal sprinkling of tiny rust specks coming through the nickel or silver plating. There is a spot about the size of a quarter on the left side of the scabbard where the plating has been sanded down to the steel. The retention rivet on the tip is missing. As stated, the drag has been heavily worn from use. This is a nice, untouched, Civil War Infantry Officer's Sword. Stock no. 30619
