VERY FINE CIVIL WAR ERA PHILADELPHIA PERCUSSION DERINGER, .40 CAL.
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Era Philadelphia Percussion Deringer. It is a small example, measuring just 5 1/4" overall with a 2 1/4" barrel. It is about .40 caliber. The only marking on the gun is on an engraved German silver inlay on the left flat of the stock. It says "J.H. Clement", probably the gun's original owner. There is no maker's name. It strongly resembles the guns made by Henry Deringer, but I believe it is a well-made contemporary copy. The Deringer became extremely popular and scores of other gunmakers produced their own copies to exploit that popularity. This gun is very well made. It is stocked in curly maple and has German silver furniture. There are two escutcheons, a thumb piece, butt cap, the engraved inlay, trigger guard and lock escutcheon. The gun is in very fine condition. The barrel and lock have a steel gray and brown patina. There are two inlaid brass bands at the breech. The gun has simple but tasteful engraving. The lock works correctly. The bore is dark but smooth. The stock is very fine. There is a tiny hairline crack that runs from the lock screw escutcheon up to the barrel channel. It is about 1/4" long. This is a very nice example of a Deringer pistol. Stock no. 30695
