ANTIQUE SMITH & WESSON DOUBLE-ACTION FRONTIER REVOLVER, .44-40 CAL.

Description :
|
This is an original, Smith & Wesson Double-Action Frontier Revolver chambered for the .44-40 (.44 WCF) cartridge. Basically, it is a Smith & Wesson First Model Double-Action revolver chambered in .44-40 instead of the standard .44 Russian cartridge. This is a large frame, double-action, break-top revolver with a 6" barrel. They were manufactured from 1881 until 1913, but all of the frames for these guns were made before 1899 and all are considered antiques. The Double-Action Frontier had its own serial number range and was first produced in 1886. This is an earlier production revolver, and the barrel has no caliber marking. Later production guns had ".44 WINCHESTER CTG." on the left side of the barrel. It is correct for this early gun to not be so marked. The revolver is in fine condition with about 85% of its factory nickel finish remaining. There is some finish loss on the barrel and frame. This is a little heavier on the left side of the barrel near the muzzle. There are three small, flaked areas on the cylinder. two are pea-sized and the third is about the size of two peas. The trigger guard and frame latch remain blue with some very light finish wear. The hammer and trigger have some case colors remaining but are turning a light gray. The bore and chambers are in fine condition. There was some fine pitting in the bore that has been polished. The rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The gun's mechanism works well, but its stiff! The black hard rubber grips are in very fine to excellent condition with no chips or cracks and just a tiny scratch or two on the bottoms. John Wesley Hardin died with a nickel S&W First Model Double-Action in his hand. If you want a real Old West revolver that isn't a Colt, you can't beat a Smith & Wesson Double-Action Frontier.
