This is an original, Mauser "Standard-Modell" K98 Rifle made in the early 1930's. The Standard-Modell was born from the need for a "universal" arm to replace long rifles and carbines. The restrictions of the Treaty of Versaille restricted the production of military weapons in Germany. FN of Belgium and CZ in Czechoslovakia each began producing short versions of the '98 Mauser for export. Not to be undone, Mauser began producing a shortened version of their Gewehr 98 under the pretense of building rifles for export and for arming civil authorities. This rifle was the "Standard-Modell". Originally chambered for the 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) cartridge, it had a 23.62-inch barrel. The bolt handle was blued and remained straight. This would, over the next few years, morph into the K98k, the standard battle rifle of the Wehrmacht. This rifle, chambered in 8mm Mauser, is one of those sent to Spain to arm Franco's Nationalist soldiers and the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War. After World War II, these rifles were arsenal refurbished. During this process the bolts were polished bright, and the bolt handles were bent down. In the 1950's and 1960's these rifles were sold as surplus. This rifle is in very fine condition with more than 98% of its arsenal refinished blue remaining. The bolt remains armory bright. The bolt handle is matching, but the safety and cocking parts do not match. Several other parts are mis-matched as well. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is very fine with a few tiny dings from use. There is a pea-sized gouge under the nose cap retention spring. There is no cleaning rod. This is a beautiful, early Mauser with a crisp Mauser Banner. Stock no. 30354
