CIVIL WAR COLT MODEL 1861 "SPECIAL" RIFLE MUSKET, .58 CALIBER
Description :
This is a .58 Caliber percussion US Model 1861 Rifle Musket produced by Colt Firearms in 1864 and so marked on the lock and barrel flat. Colt was the lead design on the M1861 Special Model Rifle Muskets. These Enfield-like pieces were built on Robbins and Lawrence Enfield Machinery and incorporated many of the better features of these British arms. Differences from the standard Model 1861 rifle musket included a wedge shaped, stronger hammer, straight ramrods with stock spoon, and screw bands with no band springs. The clean out screw on the bolster was eliminated. These changes led directly to the improvements incorporated in the M1863 Springfield Rifle Muskets. This musket is in fine condition. The metal has a steel patina with a heavy speckling of dark brown. There is some pitting around the area of the bolster. The metal has a yellowish cast, perhaps from old, dried oil. It may have been displayed where it was exposed to kitchen or cigarette smoke. It doesn't smell, though! There is less brown on the lock and a bit more on the butt plate. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is in fine condition. There are a few specks but it mostly shiny with strong rifling. The stock is in fine condition with two visible inspector cartouches. A rack number "A 3125" is stamped into the left side of the butt. This is a good looking rifle musket that should shoot well. Stock no. 30302
