RARE, CIVIL WAR SHARPS & HANKINS MODEL 1861 NAVY RIFLE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Navy Rifle made in 1861 or 1862 and chambered for a .52 caliber rimfire cartridge. The U.S. Navy purchased 600 of these under contract in 1862. They purchased the last 100 on the commercial market. Only these 700 are known to have been built. The Navy mostly issued them to Marine guards on ships. Some are known to have been used on gunboats on the Mississippi River. This rifle is in fair to antique good condition. It has about 20% of its blued finish remaining which is turning brown. Most of the blued parts of the gun have a smooth brown patina. The case-hardened frame has no finish remaining. It has a steel and dark brown patina with fine pitting overall. The lever is a smooth dark brown. The brass butt plate has a dark bronze patina. The lock works well. The action is a little loose and the lever will fall open of its own accord but works correctly otherwise. The bore is very poor. It is dark, rusty, and heavily pitted. The stock is complete, but has a heavy scattering of small dings, scratches, nicks, and gouges from use. The front sling swivel is missing. Not a gun in great condition, but a true rarity!
