SCARCE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR CADET RIFLE, .45-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1873 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .45-70 cartridge. The Cadet Model had a barrel that was 3 1/8" shorter than the regular rifle. The butt plate was smaller as well. Only about 3,000 were made between 1873 and 1877. This rifle is in very fine condition with about 90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is light finish wear at the muzzle where the bayonet was fitted and on the high points of exposed edges. Most of the finish loss is on the butt plate which has turned brown. The breech block retains its case color. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The bore looks like new. The stock is excellent as well with a visible cartouche dated 1882. This indicates to me that the stock is an armory replacement. That is a little late for this rifle, but the condition matches the gun perfectly. The cadet model is much handier than the full-sized rifle. This one is undoubtedly a good shooter. Stock no. 27124
