Description :
|
This is an original, Civil War U.S. Model 1860 Spencer Repeating Cavalry Carbine chambered for the .56-56 rimfire cartridge. The .56-56 or No. 56 cartridge refers to the diameter of the case at the top and bottom. It is actually .52 caliber. The Spencer was adopted after being endorsed by President Lincoln following a demonstration. It rapidly established itself as the premier cavalry weapon of the war and served well into the Indian Wars. The Spencer was a 7-shot repeating rifle fed from a tubular magazine in the butt stock. This carbine is in very good condition, an unaltered and as-built Civil War example. There is no original finish left on the gun. All metal surfaces have a steel gray patina with some brown speckling. The barrel band is a smooth dark brown. There is a small spot of pitting on the hammer. The action works correctly. The lock needs a little tweaking, only halving a full cock position. I can't find a half-cock position. The bore is good. There are a few small pits, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in good condition with a number of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. This is a true, untouched Civil War Spencer. Stock no. 30232
