SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK ARMY RIFLE, .50-70 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1871 Rolling Block Army Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. These were produced in 1871 and 1872 on a royalty agreement with Remington Arms. Production totaled 10,001. The rifle featured a "locking action" that caused the hammer to drop to half-cock when the breechblock was closed. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. There is no case color remaining on the receiver. It has a steel patina with a fine over speckling of brown. The barrel and stock furniture remain armory bright with a few small spots of brown corrosion. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is fair. There is some pitting from the throat up about 1/3 of the bore's length. The last two thirds of the bore is beautiful. The two-piece walnut stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. There is a faint inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. These U.S. Rolling Blocks are increasingly hard to find. It would be interesting to see how well this shoots. Stock no. 30021
