CIVIL WAR U.S. IMPORTED AUSTRIAN LORENZ RIFLE, .58 CALIBER

Description :
Here is an Austrian Model 1854 Lorenz Rifle imported for use during the Civil War. As both the North and the South struggled to equip their rapidly growing armies in the opening days of the Civil War, the nations of Europe emptied their arsenals, disposing of as many obsolete arms as possible. One of the arms obtained by both sides was the Model 1854 Lorenz Rifle. It was a rugged and dependable arm, of better quality than many of the other types acquired. The rifles imported by the North generally differed from those acquired by the South. They did not have cheek rests, often had adjustable rear sights, and were generally bored out and rifled to accept standard .58 caliber Minie Ball ammunition. This is a typical Union rifle with all of those features. It is in fair condition with an overall dark brown patina. Significant portions of the metal exhibit pitting, especially the stock furniture which is heavily pitted. The patina has a bronze cast from a clear coat that has yellowed a bit. The lock works but only has a full cock position. The percussion nipple has been broken off. The bore is dark with some heavy pits in areas. The rifling does remain visible in most areas. The stock is in fine condition with just a few small dings from use. This is a good representative example of the Civil War Lorenz. Stock no. 30038
