U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1869 CADET TRAPDOOR RIFLE, .50-70
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1869 Cadet Rifle made at Springfield Armory in 1870 and chambered for the .50-70 government cartridge. The Cadet model had a smaller butt and a shorter barrel than the full-sized rifle. The barrel on the Cadet was 29 5/8" long as opposed to 32 1/2" on the rifle. The Model 1869 also reused existing Civil War era musket locks. This rifle is in good condition. The oil quenched breech remains black. The iron furniture and the barrel remain arsenal bright. The metal has a golden yellow patina that almost looks like brass. It may be old shellac that has yellowed. The lock case colors have turned a dark gray. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is in fine condition with some speckling, but mostly smooth with strong rifling. The stock is in good condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a faint inspector's cartouche on the left flat of the stock. There is also a repair just behind the nose cap. It appears to have been cut off and reattached. There is also a shallow saw cut in the barrel on the right side above the cap. The cadet is much handier than the full-sized rifle. This one should be a good shooter. Stock no. 30042
