ANTIQUE WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 HIGH WALL RIFLE, .22 W.C.F.
Description :
This is a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle manufactured in 1887 and chambered for the .22 Winchester Center Fire cartridge. The .22 W.C.F. was a proprietary cartridge that is no longer available. The High Wall was a John Browning design, the first Browning gun for which Winchester purchased manufacturing rights. It would not be the last! This is a standard rifle. It is a single-shot, falling block rifle. This rifle has a 26-inch round No.1 barrel. It has a crescent butt plate and a Schnabel tip forearm with an ebony inset. It currently has a Marble's rear tang peep sight and blade front, as well as the standard buckhorn adjustable rear sight on the barrel. This rifle is in very fine condition with about 80% of its factory finishes remaining. The barrel retains about 80% of its factory blue with some thinning of the finish on the front half. The frame has about 70% of its cased color remaining. The left side and top are beautiful with nearly all the color remaining. The right side had a light sprinkling of corrosion that has left a light freckling on about 50% of that side. About 50% of the color remains on this side. The lever and lower tang have a trace of color remaining with a steel gray patina over most. The crescent butt has a steel patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics with a very tight action. The bore is excellent as well, bright and shiny. The stock is very fine with a few small dings from use. This is a very nice example of an early, antique Winchester High wall. Stock no. 29984
