Item No.: 10294 Price : SOLD
Item : ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR, STARR PERCUSSION CARBINE, .54 CALIBER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Starr Percussion Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. Similar to the Sharps Carbine in appearance and function, the Starr was a .54 caliber, single shot breech loader. 20,601 were produced between 1862 and 1865. In government tests, the Starr was actually rated as better than the Sharps. Mostly issued in the western theatre, the Starr is known to have been used by the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and the 24th New York Cavalries. This carbine is in good to very good condition. It has no original finish left with an overall smooth, dark brown patina. The frame has more steel patina with a brown over speckling. The brass butt plate and barrel band have a nice yellow brass patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is in fine condition. There are a few fine pits, but it is mostly shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very good with the usual small dings and scratches from use. There is an old arsenal repair of the wood at the toe. There are visible inspector's cartouches on the left side of the wrist and several sub-inspector initials on the metal. This is another cavalry carbine that saw extensive use in the Civil War. Stock no. 29932
