Item : ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR, 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CAVALRY CARBINE
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War 5th Model Burnside Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Company of Providence, Rhode Island. This carbine was designed by Union General Ambrose E. Burnside prior to the war. The Burnside was the 3rd most used carbine of the Civil War, behind the Sharps and the Spencer. It was a .54 caliber, lever action, single shot, breech loader that used a tapered metallic cartridge. The 5th Model Burnside was the version produced and issued in he largest numbers, with about 43,000 produced from 1863-1865. Cavalry Regiments known to have used the Burnside were the 1st Michigan, the 3rd Indiana, the 5th, 6th, and 7th Ohio, the 1st New Jersey, the 3rd West Virginia, the 3rd, 14th, and 18th Pennsylvania, and the 2nd, 12th, 14th, and 16th Illinois. This carbine is in good to very good condition. It has no original finish left with an overall smooth, mottled dark brown patina. The frame and lock plate are more speckled with brown than mottled. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine to excellent bore. The bore is bright and shiny with just a touch of light surface rust near the muzzle. The stock is in good condition with some small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. This is a good example of the Burnside, a carbine that saw extensive use throughout the war. Stock no. 29929
