Description :
|
This is an original, antique, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1898 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in fine condition with 85-90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is some light overall finish wear, consistent with use. It is heavier on exposed edges. The lower barrel band has turned brown. The butt plate has a mottled steel and brown patina. The bolt remains armory bright with some speckles of brown. The extractor retains most of its fire blue color. The gun has excellent mechanics. The bore is excellent as well. The stock is very fine. There are a few tiny dings overall and two larger scratches on the left side of the butt. The cartouche is visible on the left side of the wrist, but not really legible. Stenciled on the right side of the butt is "9-N.Y. 215". There is a small brass tag affixed to the butt plate tang that states "1790" over "R.C." over "516". Included is an original Kerr "NOBUCKL" sling and a brass front sight/muzzle protector. The sling is in good condition but exhibits pretty heavy soiling of the canvas. The sight protector is in very fine condition with a nice dark bronze patina. This is a nice example of an antique Krag. Stock no. 29965
