Item No.: 10284 Price : $1,750.00
Description :
Here is an original Remington Type II "Split Breech" Breech Loading Carbine chambered for the .50 rimfire cartridge. The "Split Breech" Remington was the predecessor of the later "Rolling Block" rifles. It was the first Remington arm chambered for a metallic cartridge, and the last type arm supplied on contract to the Union Army before the war ended. Production of the carbine was sub-contracted to the Savage Revolving Arms Co. of Middletown, Ct. The Union contracted for a production of 15,000 carbines, but the first 1,000 were not delivered until September of 1865, well after the cessation of hostilities. The final shipments were not delivered until May of 1866. Nearly all of these were sold to France in 1870 for use in the Franco-Prussian war. Existing examples of the type II are quite scarce. This carbine is in fair to good condition. It has an overall dark brown patina, mostly smooth, but with some pitting along the barrel channel. Yes, the front barrel band is missing. The rubber band securing the fore-end to the gun is not original! The gun works very well mechanically. The bore is fair, with some pitting, bit with visible rifling along its length. The stock is in fair condition with a number of small dings, dents, and scratches from use. The butt stock is loose in the socket and has a little wiggle in it. It looks like there may be a little wood dough around the butt plate tang. There are some letters stamped behind the trigger guard, but they are undecipherable. This is a scarce carbine in any condition. Stock no. 29935
