Item :	RARE, CONFEDERATE, SOUTH CAROLINA, PALMETTO ARSENAL RIFLED MUSKET, .69 CALIBER

Description :

This is an original, Civil War Musket manufactured at Palmetto Arsenal, South Carolina in 1852. This is one of the muskets that South Carolina contracted to have rifled by Palmetto Arsenal. This alteration was done from February to August of 1861. The .69 caliber barrels were given shallow, three-groove rifling and a rudimentary open fixed rear sight. All of these conversions have 1852 dates. There is absolutely no doubt that this is a Confederate musket. It is in very good condition with a mostly smooth, dark brown patina. There is some rusting and pitting in the area around the bolster and nipple. The barrel is 41 1/2" long with brass barrel bands. The bayonet lug is located on the bottom of the barrel to allow the use of surplus Model 1816 Bayonets. The barrel is marked on the left side with "W.G. & CO." for William Glaze. There is a small hole drilled in front of the rear sight blade. It does not penetrate the barrel wall. I don't know what it was for. The Palmetto marked lock works well. The bore is dark with some pitting, but the rifling is visible. There appears to be a repair to the tang. The sling swivel mount has broken off of the front barrel band. The brass was not as durable as steel. The stock is very good. There is an old chip on the left side of the barrel tang and the wood is lower than the tang on both sides. There are a few small dings and scratches from use. The butt plate is stamped "SC" on the tang. The nose cap is from a European musket, one of thousands imported. This is a true Confederate arm.
