FINE, CIVIL WAR, BRITISH PATTERN 1853 RIFLE MUSKET, .577 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, British Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket made by the Birmingham Small Arms Trade Consortium in 1862. The most widely imported long arm of the Civil War, the P-1853 was purchased and issued in large numbers by both the North and the South. This rifle musket was manufactured in .58 caliber rather than the standard British .577 caliber. It is marked 25 balls to the pound rather than the 24 balls of .577 caliber. In addition, there are no British Military markings on the gun. It was made specifically for export. It also has no markings to indicate that it is a Confederate arm. This musket is in fine condition. The barrel retains about 20% of its original factory blued finish. The remainder is over-speckled with brown patina. The barrel bands and screw heads have a steel patina. Traces of case color remain on the lock plate. The brass stock furniture has a nice dark brass patina. The lock has excellent mechanics. The bore has a few pits but is mostly smooth with visible rifling along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with just a tiny ding or two from use. There is a crisp BSA Trade consortium cartouche on the right side of the butt. Alas, the front sling swivel screw is a replacement! Still, this is one of the best Pattern 1853's I have had in years.
