FRENCH MODEL 1874 GRAS RIFLE W/ MODIFICATION OF 1880, 11X59R

Description :
|
This is a French Model 1874 Gras Rifle built at Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault in 1875 and chambered for the 11x59mm Rimmed cartridge. This rifle has the Modification of 1880 which is a milled groove behind the chamber to relieve dangerous gas pressure in the event of a ruptured case. These rifles served until the adoption of the Model 1886 Lebel Rifle. Some even served into WWI as a war expedient re-barreled for the 8x50mmR cartridge. This rifle is in fair to good condition with an overall smooth dark brown patina. The bolt is brown as well. All numbers are mismatched. The mechanics work very well. The bore is dark with some roughness in the grooves, but the rifling is strongly visible along the barrel's length. The stock is in fair condition. It is dark and oily with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are a number of old chips along the barrel channel that have worn smooth over the years. The fruit wood plug is missing from the butt stock. This is a well-used old French War Horse. Stock no. 29537
