Item No.: 9916 Price : SOLD
Item : AMERICAN PERCUSSION LONG RIFLE BY GEORGE KOPP, CA. 1850
Description :
This is an American Percussion Long Rifle built by George Kopp. Kopp was a gun stocker and builder in Huntington County, Pennsylvania in the Bourough of Geeseytown, Frankstown Township. He worked from about 1830 to 1870. This rifle probably dates to the 1850's. The rifle has a 41 1/2" straight octagon barrel of about .44 caliber. It has deep groove rifling with 8 grooves. The stock is highly figured curly maple, typical of Kopp's work. The gun has double set triggers and a nicely engraved brass patchbox. The percussion lock has a brass lock plate and was made by "Eagle Gun Works" of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was the company of James Golcher, another gun maker who also made locks to sell to gun stockers. It is known that in 1850, Golcher's 17 employees made 7,200 gun locks for commercial sale. This rifle is in fine condition. The barrel and hammer have a smooth dark brown patina. The brass stock furniture and patch box have a nice golden bronze patina with some brown tarnishing on the patch box. The lock works well but has no half cock position. The set triggers function correctly. They are single set triggers, meaning that the rear trigger must be set to fire the rifle. The bore is dark but looks like a smooth brown. The stock is very good with visible figure. There are a few dings and scratches from years of use. There is a hairline crack on the lock panel running from the front of the lock forward and then back to the trigger guard. There are two cracks on the toe of the stock that have loosened the lower butt plate screw and allowed it to fall out. The screw is missing. There is an unmarked brass thumb plate behind the barrel tang. This is a very nice example of Kopp's work. I have a particular weakness for brass locks! Stock no. 28378
