This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1900 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in good condition. It retains about 30% of its original factory blued finish, most of which is on the barrel. The receiver shows signs of some surface rusting with a mottled brown and gray patina. The bolt handle has turned brown with the remainder having a heavily spotted brown patina. The stock furniture is a smooth mottled brown and steel, except for the butt plate which is heavily pitted, dark brown, and rough. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is fair. It is dark and a little frosty, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with a visible cartouche. There are a few small dings from use. This is a well used, but serviceable Krag. Stock no. 27330
