Here is an original, German Model 1898 Mauser Sporting Rifle manufactured at Gewehrfabrik Danzig just after WWI and chambered for the 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) cartridge. Danzig produced very limited numbers of these sporting rifles in late 1918 and early 1919. There were no military orders, so Danzig made civilian rifles to survive. Shortly afterward, Danzig ceased to exist. These sporting rifles used the Kar98 action with small ring receivers. Since they were made at the arsenal, they do not have commercial proofs. They do have the Prussian Eagle Imperial German stamping. The rifle has a 24" stepped round barrel. It has machined stripper clip guides on the receiver feeding a 5-round internal box magazine. The rifle has double set triggers in a steel trigger guard. It has been fitted with a two position express style rear sight and European blade front sight. The half-stock is walnut, checkered at the wrist with a cheek piece on the butt and a semi-pistol grip. It has a schnable tip. This rifle is in fine condition with about 80% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is a little finish wear on the receiver and the magazine floor plate and trigger guard. The bolt handle is bright. The gun has an excellent bore and mechanics. The stock is in fine condition with a few tiny dings from use. The gun was fitted with a red rubber recoil pad in the distant past. The rubber has softened over the years. The rifle was factory fitted with a telescopic sight. The scope was made by Dr. Walter Gerard of Charlottenburg, Germany. The German style scope mounts are numbered to the gun. While the scope has a separate serial number, it is also numbered to the gun. The rings are integral to the scope. The receiver, barrel, bolt, scope, and mounts have matching numbers. No other parts are numbered. The scope is in very fine condition. The optics are clear. Also included is the original leather sling, complete and in fair condition with some flaking of the leather surface. This is a classic Mauser sporting rifle. Danzig sporters are very hard to find. They made few and few have survived. It is a beautiful rifle. Stock no. 27521
