Item No.: 9756 Price : SOLD
Item : WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 SADDLE RING CARBINE, CANADIAN NORTHWEST MOUNTED POLICE
Description :
This is an original Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1884 and shipped to the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police. The carbine's serial number is known to have been shipped to them and "N.W.M.P." in a crescent is visible on the right side of the butt stock. It is chambered for the .45-75 W.C.F. cartridge. The Mounties used these carbines from 1878 until 1914. They were hard used but earned a reputation for rugged dependability. They were up to the task and had a longer service record than any other shoulder arm used by the Mounties. This gun is in fine condition with about 35% thinning blue remaining. The hammer, lever, and loading gate retain the most blued finish. The barrel has a good amount of blue that is turning a smooth brown. The receiver has a smooth brown/steel patina. The carbine works very well mechanically. The hammer spring is heavy, requiring more force on the lever to operate. The bore is very fine, bright and shiny. The stock is in good condition with a liberal scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a 3" hairline crack on the left side of the butt extending back from the upper tang screw. The crescent banner with "N.W.M.P." is faint but visible. The stories this rifle could tell of its service with the famed Canadian Mounties. Stock no. 27427
