Description :
|
This is an original, Model 1866 U.S. Breech-Loading Rifle manufactured in 1866 and chambered for the .50-70 Government cartridge. Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trapdoor" conversion, these rifles were designed by Erskine S. Allin at Springfield Armory. Following the Civil War, the US military saw the need for a breech loading cartridge arm. Allin designed a rifle that could be converted from existing stocks of Model 1863 percussion muskets. The first Model Allin used the original M1863 barrels and was chambered for a .58 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Second Model Allin was re-barreled and chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. It was the first centerfire Trapdoor. The design would last into the 1880's. This rifle is in excellent, like new condition. The metal remains nearly 100% Armory Bright. The breech block retains all of its black oil quenched finish. The lock and hammer retain all of their case colors. The gun has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. There are a few small spots of corrosion in the bore, but it is mostly bright with strong rifling along its length. The stock is equally excellent with just a very tiny ding or two from storage. There are two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. This is the finest 2nd Model Allin Conversion I have ever seen, much less owned. It is truly a museum piece. Stock no. 27147
